Gamma Ray with Michael Kiske – Masters of Rock, Czech Republic 26.11.2011
I started my trip on Friday the 25.11.2011 at around 9 am in the morning from near Frankfurt with my car. The weather was ok and I managed to do this trip without any traffic jams. The distance was around 800km and the first part of theroute was easy to drive until I reached Prague. After passing Prague, the road was terrible to drive with lots of road damages. My car somehow survived it nevertheless. I made 2 stops for resting and the last part after the sun was gone, had some foggy weather situations. I arrived in Zlin around 6 pm and now a real problem occurred, because my navigation system didn’t have stored the house number of the hotel. So I spend an hour in searching the hotel and luckily found a different hotel in which a friendly woman showed me the direction with a map. Then I happily and a little bit tired found it at around 7 pm. After dinner I went to my room for watching a little TV and doing some internet surfing.
The next day I spent some time in investigating Zlin and searching for the festival location. I found the place quite easily, it was an ice-hockey stadium and it was located only around 1km away from my hotel. I arrived at the festival place around 1pm and it was very cold. I was wearing a leather jacket first, but it didn’t protect enough since inside of the stadium, there was no heating. The security at the entrance was very nice and did only some small random checking if you have any dangerous items with you. The first band started at 1:30 pm and it was as expected one of these Death, Black, Deathcore or whatever you call it. Sorry, but for me it was only a terrible noise. The second band continued in that way and since it was still too cold for me, I decided to go back to the hotel and change to some warmer clothes. I skipped the following Death growl bands and returned to Kingdom Come. It was ok, but sadly I didn’t know any of their recent material. Maybe I will buy some of their material soon.
Then I skipped another band Coroner which is again not my cup of tea and went eating instead. I returned to the last part of Morbid Angels show and again I didn’t understand why there were so many bands of this style, if you compare the line-up of previous years. Then Amon Amarth followed which also had an aggressive vocal style, but also some melodic parts in their music. So this was at least a little bit better than the other bands before. The audience was really very much into them which I could see from my place at the tribune. After Amon Amarth finished their gig almost 90% of the audience left the inner place and went upstairs. I don’t know if all of them just went for a beer and returned later, or maybe already left after Amon Amarth, since the audience was very Black Metal oriented which you could see with their Shirts. You only saw a few people with Shirts from Helloween and Gamma Ray.
While the audience went upstairs I went the opposite direction and with some effort I could get downstairs. So for me it was a very good chance to get a good place in front of the stage. I managed to get a place in 3rd or 4th row. I didn’t check my watch by that time, but I had the feeling Gamma Ray started much later than expected. When they were were almost ready, the first “Kiske, Kiske” calls appeared. First the organizer of the festival appeared again on stage and announced the band. I didn’t understand what he said in Czech language, but I heard the name “Michael Kiske” and then the intro of Gamma Ray could be heard. They started their very good show with “Anywhere in the Galaxy”. They mainly played some classics and some rare played songs. I liked very much “Money”, “Dethrone Tyranny”, “Gamma Ray” and of course “Rebellion in Dreamland”. Kais voice was in a good shape, even if he did one thing that I really dislike. During a short break, he smoked a cigarette near the speakers.
Nevertheless, then another great song despite being a ballad followed “A while in Dreamland” and I already expected Kiske during this song for another duet like in Bochum, Pratteln and Hamburg, but unfortunately, Kai sang it alone. After this song Kiske appeared from backstage and Kai introduced him for the great and a little bit underrated song “Time to Break Free” followed. Kiske seemed very relaxed and more matured than ever before. His vocal vocal performance was of course outstanding once again. He did a small mistake in the lyrics which he later criticized himself. After this performance Kai said that he will appear for more songs later. After some more great Gamma Ray tracks, Kai said this is the end of the show, but as expected they returned and gain with Kiske for the true Helloween (or better said Kaiween) classics “Future World” and for the first time with Gamma Ray “I want Out”. They did “Future World” without the singalong part which was a good decision, because most people have heard it too often and then it becomes boring. As expected the audience were most excited for these old classics.
The most funny part of the show was after the last notes of “I want Out” when Kiske went backstage and started singing an old Elvis classic “Are you Lonesome tonight”, which showed once again, he is one of the few singers (in any kind of musical style) who is something special and can surprise/motivate/move the audience. He just has that special feeling. I really hope he keeps this great mood and shows us more of this special performance the next year with more shows of Unisonic.
After walking back to my hotel I spent some time uploading the videos that I took and then fell asleep. The next day I spent again in Zlin for some resting and sightseeing in the city where I took some nice pictures. I drove back to Germany on Monday and again the weather was nice and I didn’t face any serious traffic jam. I arrived near Frankfurt around 6 pm on Monday 28.11.2011 and again very happy for doing this trip.
