This festival didn’t start really good for me and on friday I had to face around 20km of traffic jam and missed the live performance of Pink Cream 69. Luckily i could meet them at least in the signing session. Saturday was not a good day for me as well, but I won’t go into more details now and instead include 2 reviews of the Avantasia concert, the first is from me and the 2nd is from Skymaid:
Kiske Fanclub review: It was a good show and Arne Wiegand (from the band Santiano), did a solid performance. His acting was a little different than the one from Oli, but it was ok after some time. I heard a few little strange things regarding guitar intros etc, but nothing serious. Kiske was in great shape and they had some fun onstage. 2 girls threw some presents for Tobi and Kiske on stage and Tobi was hit by one. That was not intended . Then Michi Kiske was curious and opened the present on stage and he checked for everything. He even checked a letter which was for Tobi. But he realized immediately that it was better not reading it loud on stage.
Thomas Rettke took over some more vocal parts of Oli and Ronnie and it was really good. At the beginning of the concert the place was very crowded, but sadly later many left the show. I think this was not because they didn’t like Avantasia, but mainly because of the terrible heat they had to suffer the whole day. It were around 36 degrees and over 40 in the sun during the day. But despite fewer people, the remaining audiences got louder than a fully crowded area. The band recognized and enjoyed this very much. They mentioned it later as well.
When they started playing ‘Sign of the Cross’ thunder and lightning started, but luckily it was quite away from the festival. They finished the concert and the whole festival with a nice firework. Luckily the rain and heavier thunder&lightning only started when I was already back in my hotel. One day later, there were really heavy weather conditions in this area with whole houses and cars damaged by big hail showers. So we had a lot of luck with the weather in the end, despite that it was terrible hot.
Saturday, July 27th, 9:35 pm: it was Avantasia time at the Rock of Ages festival in Seebronn, Germany. All band members appeared relaxed and seemed to have recovered from the past tour marathon. The band played a „shortened“ festival setlist (that is, without Sleepwalking, Stargazers, Black Orchid, Scales of Justice) and a melted version of Seven Angels and Sign of the Cross. Arne Wiegand played Oli’s guitar parts, and he did so very well. Ronnie’s parts were mostly sung by Tobi, he performed Invoke the Machine all on his own.
During the show Michi received two presents and was so curious to see what’s inside that he opened one on stage together with Tobi and the other one inbetween his vocal parts of the same song. Felix didn’t manage to catch the stick he threw into the air, which caused a slight interruption, and Tobi shredded his microphone exactly the same way.
Michi „stole“ Arne’s sunglasses and even looked good wearing them. Especially Tobi, Eric and Michi made a lot of fun, joked around and literally radiated passion and commitment to what they were doing.
The rest of the show held no big surprises: Everyone including the audience was in good moods and all vocalists delivered excellent performances. It was a pleasure to watch them perform, and obviously the band also enjoyed the show and the enthusiastic audience. During the last song the event’s final fireworks started on the left hand side of the stage, on the right one could see sheet lightning from an oncoming thunderstorm, what a great finale!
