1. Stop: Mons, Belgium

I started my journey to Avantasia on 11.04. with my first destination in Mons, Belgium for the PPM Festival. I travelled around 5 hours by car including one stop. I arrived there in late afternoon and could do a little resting in my hotel. The next day I went to the indoor festival arena, but sadly they opened the doors very late and the first band played, when we were still trying to get our festival wristband. The weather was quite cold, windy and rainy for the first 2 days, so I was quite happy that it was an indoor festival.

The arena itself was quite good and since there were not so many audiences, you had some place to walk around or sit down somewhere. Also as a result of this late door opening, there was no signing session for Avantasia and sadly I didn’t see anyone in the VIP area either, so this was the beginning of my journey to get some fanclub stuff signed. This show had a few special things like Michael Kiske not singing in ‘Farewell’, but it was again a good show and now the festival season lies ahead of Avantasia.

Comments/review

My comments about the show: “It was again very crowded, maybe not sold out, but a lot of people and the concert hall, it was again very hot. The audience was a little less enthusiastic like Hamburg or Oberhausen, but still really good. A strange thing about Kiske, he didn’t sing on ‘Farewell’, and Tobi sang his part for the first time in this tour. He also made a strange very low sounding part in ‘Shelter From The Rain’. No idea what happened, he really sounded very good in all other songs.

The next concert lead Avantasia to Oberhausen and it was the first show where they played the full set-list again, after a reduced part of Kiske due to his flu. They spontaneously decided to play ‘Breaking Away’ again in Oberhausen. It was again a sold-out concert.

Comments/review

Jasmin commented about the show: “That was the most epic evening I’ve ever had! Avantasia.” My comments about the show: “It was a very good show and the audience again sang most of the lyrics with the band. But the concert hall has a big problem, no fresh air is circulating there and Tobi several times talked about it and that they still play the whole show despite this not so good circumstances. My complete clothes were wet after the show and I don’t want to know how it is in summer. I got to know from Basti that ‘Breaking Away’ was not planned and still in the hotel they said that they won’t play it. But when they saw the audience and the reactions, it was a spontanious decission to play it.

After Berlin, the next stop for Avantasia was the hometown of Michael Kiske, Hamburg. Luckily he recovered very well from his flu. They still skipped ‘Breaking away’, but Kiske returned in ‘Stargazers’ and he sang great in all songs. By the way, it was a sold-out show:

Comments/review

My comments about the show: “Kiske sounded very good in ‘Stargazers’ almost no flu hearable and he seems to enjoy his hometown. Kiske introduced it ‘Originally I wanted to skip this one, but i try it’. I didn’t hear anything from his flu anymore, even not in ‘Seven Angels’. He had his voice again in full control and also no breathing problems that I noticed. Kiske really seemed to enjoy Hamburg very much and he stayed longer on the stage than in any other show. He joked with Amanda in the finishing of the show, he took her hair and put them on his head. Hamburg absolutely ruled. They almost knew all lyrics.

After the great show in Fulda, Avantasia went to Berlin to play there for the first time ever. Sadly the concert hall was maybe half full and many people came to this show from foreign countries. Therefore Tobias switched during to show to English as a nice gesture to the people  from countries like Poland, Australia, England, Scottland etc.

Sadly Michael Kiske got a a bad flu and already had some problem the shows before, but it got really worse in Berlin, so he reduced his parts and they skipped ‘Breaking Away’ completely and Kiske also didn’t sing in ‘Stargazers’.

So here is the set-list:

The setlist:
01. Intro ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ (A Space Odyssey soundtrack) & Spectres (Atkins/Sammet)
02. Invoke The Machine (Atkins/Sammet)

Comments/review

My comments about the show: “They changed in set list after ‘Reach Out For The Light’ they played ‘Avantasia’, so no ‘Breaking Away’. Kiske had a few problems at the end of seven angels, but was still great. The concert hall inner field was half filled and the sitting places the same, so maybe 800 people. They often had to motivate the audience. Tobi changed and start to talk to English, since he noticed most people came from Australia, Poland, Scotland and England.Matt Chapman said about the show: “Best Avantasia gig ever. One of the best gig I’ve ever been to as well!” Robert commented: The show of 3-hours of Avantasia have been the biggest thing in the universe.

Avantasia:

Press/Media

Our Kiske official fanclub photo album is here. Metalhammer short, very short review of this show here. Here is a photo album by George Quartz, on his facebook account.

Here is for now our last mini interview with musicians from Avantasia and this time we interviewed Oliver Hartmann, the singer and guitarist of Avantasia, who is also known from At Vance and his own band Hartmann. So we hope you enjoy reeading some news regarding the ongoing Avantasia tour:

Kiske Fanclub: After your return from Rock Meets Classic, you only have a short period of time to learn all new songs. Is it difficult to adapt them to your way of playing? Since you’re usually the guitarist in the tour, would you prefer to play more songs in the albums?

Oliver: Of course it’s a lot of work to learn all the new tracks in just a few days since I really just came back from the tour with RMC. Normally Sascha is playing most of the rhythm tracks on the albums and his style is not so different from mine so it’s usually no problem for me to make them fit for my style of playing.
I added a few solos again for this record but it wasn’t really possible to do more since there were simply too many guests who wanted do add their solos too. But that’s ok for me since there are some really cool parts by everyone on the new tracks!!!

Kiske Fanclub: Masters of Rock festival published that Avantasia could film the show there? Is this confirmed and are there different line-ups planned for different legs of the tour?

Oliver: I’m not sure if Masters of Rock other shows will be filmed but hopefully they will! As far as I know unfortunately Ronnie Aktins won’t be there for the South American leg of the tour what is very sad since he’s doing a great job on stage. But we won’t change the line up so we will maybe just split up the missing parts of Ronnie between Eric Martin, Thomas Rettke and me.

Kiske Fanclub: What do you say about Michael Kiske in the last tour? Talking about his live performance, but also about backstage experiences. When did you first listen to Michael Kiske?

Oliver: Michael is a brilliant singer and a great guy so we were happy when he confirmed for the last tour in 2010 – and this time, too! In 2010 we were curious how it will be since he wasn’t on stage for so many years. But he felt comfortable with the band and did a great show – and the people loved it! He’s normally warming up backstage with his Ukulele singing some Elvis songs for us, haha. I think the first time when I listened to Kiske and the early Helloween albums was in the mid of the 80’s. Long time ago

Kiske Fanclub:  Like Kiske you are the only one that were in all albums of Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia, the first one is already 12 years old and after all these years, which is your favourite album of Avantasia?

Oliver: Yeah, it’s already more than 12 years ago since we recorded the first part of the Metal Opera – time goes by quickly somehow and I’m proud to be still part of it. Besides the new album which contains absolutely great tracks my favorite one is maybe “The scarecrow”. But of course I like the other albums, too.

The next Avantasia was in the hometown of Tobias, Fuldat, where they also played in 2010.

Comments/review

Fattima Stevens commented about the show: “Very impresive show. I didn’t know it would be so long, I’m terrible tired ha! Thanks Tobias for coming back on tour.” My few comments about the show: “Avantasia rocked fulda despite thad kiske had a terrible flu. I could heard it a little in ‘seven angels’, he had problems with breathing. I was really in the middle of the crowd and it was almost sold out and for German audience, it was really good as well. Tobi told that there several available tickets for Berlin and i someone has time, they should travel there. He also said, Berlin and heavy metal will never come together. Oliver Hartmann and Amanda Somerville came to the merchandise area and I got some signatures.” Markus Aragones commented: “Great show tonight! Thanks for years of strong emotions during ‘Farewell’, ‘Shelter From The Rain’, ‘The Seven Angels’, ‘Breaking Away’.

Raphael Medina commented: “My second show of Avantasia today, before Ludwigsburg and another great show! I can’t wait for Hellfest!” Stephanie Karlsson: “What 3 hours! Thanks a lot Tobi and all avantasians. Hope you will return soon.“My comments: “The audience was really very good, only in the last 30 or 45 minutes, they got somehow a little tired and Tobi several times asked them if they get tired. In this show, I think it was not Kiske who sang from backstage the few high parts in ‘Savior In The Clockwork’, it was Amanda. I could see her standing there and singing.” Marc Svensson said: “I really love Atkins and Kiske voice, so different, so special, great show, thanks!

Oliver Hartmann published on his facebook account a few hours before the show: “Looking forward to our next AVANTASIA show in Ludwigsburg/Germany tonight. With more than 3000 sold tickets it’s gonna be pretty crowded tonight!” Amanda Somerville: “Getting pumped up for the Avantasia show tonight in Ludwigsburg, Germany! There’s an after show party / meet&greet at the Rockfabrik, so come see us!” and Tobias Sammet: “Ludwigsburg – we’re getting ready!!!!!!! 🙂 We all got hay fever, but who cares… You’ll sing along anyway! See ya on stage.

My impressions about the show: “Back from a great Avantasia concert in Ludwigsburg. We heard many ‘Kiske, Kiske’ calls when he first entered the stage and this was a little surprise, since we only know this from South America and Southern Europe. Ludwigsburg really rocked.Tammi Schub published on twitter : “Yeah this is what Tobias meant about a long show! I’m tired! It was an amazing show!” Oliver Theib commented: “Whow! What an overwhelming amazing awesome bombastic epic show of the Avantasia ensemble! Nothing left to play after 3 hours!
